After all the rumors, the delays, and the speculation, the outrageous 252-mph Bugatti Veyron 16.4 will hit the road later this year. Read below to discover what makes this car so super.
Cockpit
Interior is simple, but luxurious and fully equipped. "Boast gauge" next to tach indicates engine power output. Veyron is intended to be a comfortable two-seater that can be driven long distances; several of the 11 prototypes built so far have completed more than 50,000 miles, each following the same grueling test regimen as that of regular VW models.
Brakes
Unique cross-drilled and turbine vented carbon rotors draw in cooling air. Each caliper has eight titanium pistons. Bugatti claims maximum deceleration of 1.3 g on road tires. Prototypes have been subjected to repeated 1.0 g braking from 194 to 50 mph without fade. With the car's fearsome acceleration from 50 to 194 mph, that test can be performed every 22 seconds.
Engine
Direct-injection 8.0-liter W-16 has 64 valves and four turbos. Power output has been confirmed at 987 horses at 6000 rpm, with 922 pound-feet of torque at just 2200. Engine drives all four wheels (with a fixed 30/70 front/rear torque split) through a seven-speed DSG twin-clutch trans. Bugatti claims 0-to-60 mph in under 3.0 seconds, 0-to-124 mph in 6.0, and 0-to-186 mph in 14.0.
Airbrake
At speeds above 124 mph, the rear wing also acts
as an airbrake, snapping to a 70-degree angle in
0.4 second once brakes are applied, providing up to 0.6 g of deceleration. Bugatti claims the Veyron will brake from 252 mph to a standstill in less than 10 seconds.
